NEGATIVE NATIVE HISTORY
What exactly is the negative history of Natives?
A: Residential School
The killing of children at Residential Schools.
The residential school teachers and staff ridiculing the Native student’s way of life.
The residential school taking children away from their families.
The residential school abusing the children sexually, emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually.
The residential school having control restricting the speaking of Indian language.
The residential school finding the Natives sick but not doing anything to help them.
The residential school having children working more than learning in school.
The residential school having children punished for speaking their language, running away and stealing food.
The residential school hurting the children by not feeding them good food, getting them to dress in uniforms and cutting their hair short.
B: Government
The government calling the Natives drunken stupid Indians.
The government having control over the daily lives of Natives.
The government having the Traditional Chiefs give up their Band’s rights and freedom.
The government having the RCMP and clergy run the reserve.
The government taking all the resources from the Natives and selling them without the money going back to the Natives.
C: Reserve
The reserve had been the original stopping ground for all Natives to hunt, trap and fish for food and supplies for the coming year.
The reserve stopped the Natives from their harvesting system.
The reserve kept people from travelling to their regular harvesting places.
The reserve became a jail and the Natives trapped within its boundaries.
D: Spirit
The money brought greed. The greed brought envy. The envy brought hardships. The hardships brought incest. The incest brought shame. The shame brought family dysfunction. The family dysfunction brought hurts, pain and suffering. The hurts, pain and suffering brought alcoholism. The alcoholism brought drug addictions. The drug addictions brought family breakup. The family breakup brought loss of spirit. The Spirit needs to be awakened.
